Pierre Parent (1768 - 1812)
Pierre Parent, the son of Simon-Jacques Parent (1729 - 1802) and Marie -Anne-Jeanne Giroux (1730 - 1768?), was born on January 21, 1768 in Beauport, Quebec. Since Pierre was born five years after the conquest of Nouvelle France (1763), Beauport would have been in the province of Quebec, it would not become Lower Canada for another twenty - three years. Above, I put a question mark after Marie - Anne - Jeanne Giroux's date of death because I could only find one source that states that she died in 1768. There is an argument that this could be a valid date because there were no more children for Simon - Jacques Parent and Marie - Anne - Jeanne Giroux after 1768. Pierre was the last child to be born, he was born in 1768. If Pierre's mother died giving birth to Pierre or there were complications after birth that led to her death then this date would make all the sense in the world. Until I can establish more evidence, the year 1768 as the date of death for Marie - Anne - Jeanne Giroux is circumstantial. I make somewhat of a big deal regarding this issue because too many people accept genealogical information without question which only serves to propagate incorrect information, or as people are fond of saying these days, 'fake news'. There is enough incorrect information floating around on the Internet these days without me contributing to the detritus. This is why I am careful about what I consider to be a 'fact'.
Pierre married Genevieve Lalonde (1773 - 1865) on January 27, 1794 in St. Joseph de Soulanges. Les Cedres, Lower Canada. Pierre was 26 years old when he married and Genevieve was 21 years old. Pierre Parent was the first Parent in my family line to venture outside of Beauport to marry. Les Cedres, is 322 kilometers from Beauport and would probably have taken three days to travel by horse or carriage. If Pierre travelled by water he could have made the trip in a day or so. I have no record of how he travelled from Beauport to Les Cedres. After they were married it is clear that they settled in Les Cedres because Simon Parent was born on L'ile Perrot (1794 - 1874) which is a mere 17.3 kilometers from Les Cedres. I see Pierre's move to Les Cedres as the first step of the Parent family's move out of the province of Quebec into Ontario and then to Western Canada. I also have no record of how he came to marry Genevieve Lalonde although the relationship between the Parent family and the Lalonde family became intertwined after Pierre married Genevieve.
To clarify the relationship between Corinne Lalonde (1889 - 1965) who was my grandmother married to Nicklous Parent and Genevieve Lalonde (1773 - 1865), I found it to be useful to create the chart below which shows each generation of the Lalonde family and when they intersected with the Parent family.
Both Genevieve Lalonde (1773 - 1865) and Corinne Lalonde (1889 - 1965) are descended from Philippe Lalonde and Jeanne Duval. Philippe and Jeanne were both born in Rouen, France and their dates of birth and death seemed to be a little uncertain so I will decline to state those dates until I have researched them more thoroughly and arrived at a greater degree of certainty. Genevieve and Corinne are still in the same direct relationship in the next generation with a direct connection to Jean Lalonde (1640 - 1687) and Marie Barbant (1639 - 1702). It is in the next generation where the relationship diverges. Genevieve is descended from Guillaume Lalonde (1684 - 1752) and Madeleine Allen (1692 - 1764) while Corinne is descended from Jean - Baptiste Lalonde (1675 - 1750) and Jeanne Gervais (1679 - 1765). Jean Lalonde (1640 - 1687) and Jean - Baptiste Lalonde (1675 - 1750) were brothers. There are six generations from Corinne Lalonde and where she has a common ancestor with Genevieve Lalonde and four generations where Genevieve has a common ancestor with Corinne. Using and online family relationship calculator I worked out that Corinne and Genevieve are fifth cousins twice removed. That establishes the relationship between Corinne Lalonde and Genevieve Lalonde.
The other question I have is why and how did Pierre Parent marry Genevieve Lalonde? I looked at the places were the Lalonde family lived over the generations. Going back to the beginning, Philippe Lalonde and Jeanne Duval were married in Rouen, France before emigrating to Nouvelle France. Jean Lalonde married Marie Brabant in Montreal. Guillaume Lalonde married Madeleine Allen in Sainte Anne de Bellevue which is on the island of Montreal. Louis Lalonde married Louise Picard in Trois - Riviere. Joseph Lalonde married Francoise Emery in Les Cedres and Genevieve Lalonde married Pierre Parent in les Cedres. It would seem that the Lalonde family was established in the Montreal area, more specifically, les Cedres. How Pierre Parent came to know and marry Genevieve Lalonde is still a mystery that will require more research.
In the eighteen years that they were married, Pierre and Genevieve had six children; Simon Parent (1794 - 1874), Marie - Francoise Parent (1796 - 1834), Joseph Parent (1798 - ), Paul Parent (1803 - 1880), Elizabeth Parent (1809 - 1864), Jean - Baptiste Parent (1812 -), and Elizabeth Parent (1805 - 1806). It is important to note that at least two of Pierre's sons, Simon and Paul emigrated to Gwillimbury in Ontario.
At this point, there is not a lot more that I can say about Pierre Parent. Pierre died in 1812 which makes me wonder if he had anything to do with the war of 1812. At the moment, I do not have anything that would indicate that he did. It will take more research to answer the questions that I have posed in this post so for now, I will stop here.
